How to Choose Your Elopement Destination

Choosing where to elope is one of the most personal decisions in the entire planning process. Unlike a traditional wedding venue — where you're primarily choosing a building — an elopement destination shapes the entire atmosphere, photography, legal requirements, and cost of your day. The right destination feels like an extension of who you are as a couple.

After researching hundreds of elopement destinations and watching both of my daughters navigate this decision, I've found that couples who are happiest with their choice focused on three things: the kind of photos they wanted, how much planning they were willing to do, and how far they were willing to travel. Everything else — budget, legal requirements, season — can be worked around once you have clarity on those three priorities.

US vs. International Elopements

Domestic elopements are simpler to plan — no passport logistics, no international marriage documentation, and no language barriers with vendors. States like Colorado, Hawaii, and Nevada have streamlined marriage license processes specifically because they attract so many eloping couples. You can often plan a complete domestic elopement in 4–6 weeks.

International elopements require 2–4 months of advance planning at minimum. You'll need to research the specific legal requirements for your nationality in that country, obtain a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) from your home country, and coordinate with a local wedding planner who understands the legal process. The reward is often extraordinary — there's simply nothing like exchanging vows in the Tuscan countryside or on a Santorini cliff at sunset.

Seasonal Considerations

Every destination has a peak season, a shoulder season, and an off-season — and each has tradeoffs. Peak season means ideal weather and the best photography conditions, but also higher prices, more crowds, and permit competition. Shoulder season (typically one month before or after peak) often offers 20–30% lower vendor rates with only slightly less ideal conditions.

For mountain destinations like Rocky Mountain National Park or Glacier, July and August offer wildflowers and clear skies but require booking 3–4 months in advance. For beach destinations like the Florida Keys or Outer Banks, the shoulder months of April–May and October–November offer warm weather without summer crowds. European destinations like Tuscany and Santorini are best in May–June and September, before the summer tourist peak.

Budget by Destination Type

Your destination choice has the single largest impact on your total elopement budget. A courthouse elopement in your home city can cost under $500. A Las Vegas chapel elopement with a photographer runs $1,500–$4,000. A Hawaii beach elopement with a full package typically costs $2,500–$6,000. A Tuscany villa elopement with a local planner, photographer, and florals can reach $8,000–$20,000.

The good news is that even the most aspirational destinations have budget-friendly options. Many couples elope in Tuscany for under $5,000 by choosing a civil ceremony at the local town hall, hiring a freelance photographer rather than a full-service planner, and staying in an agriturismo rather than a luxury villa. The destination doesn't have to dictate the budget — your choices within that destination do.

A Note From Larry

"My first daughter eloped in Hawaii during COVID — it was the destination that made sense logistically and emotionally when their original venue fell through. My second daughter chose the Smoky Mountains because she and her husband had hiked there on their first trip together. In both cases, the destination wasn't arbitrary — it was deeply personal. That's the advice I give every couple who asks: choose a place that already means something to you, or a place you've always dreamed of together. The photos will be beautiful anywhere. The meaning comes from the story behind the choice."
